Car components
EGR valves

pressure regulators
camshaft and crankshaft position
mass air flow meter
air temperature sender

|
Car components
Modern, electronically controlled cars, have a wide range of controlling components fitted to them.
This applies to the diesel car, the petrol car and hybrids
Like EGR (exhaust gas recycling) valves, pressure sensors,
and pressure regulators as well as sensors to indicate camshaft and crankshaft position.
In addition to these are meters which 'tell' the ecu about airflow entering the engine and the
temperature of the air.

Car information is a large topic
car information can be about....
road tax/road fund licence
type of fuel,
|
How much road tax you have to pay - this will be determined by the level of CO2 the
car produces
Which insurance category it comes into - this will be detrmined by the insurance company, and they
will catogorise the car on engine size, value, power output and other criteria
Which type of fuel it runs on?
|
|
Fuelled...Diesel, Petrol, LPG, CNG, Hybrid, Electric
|
It could be diesel or petrol or gas or hybrid or one of the new electric vehicles
that are appearing on our city streets.
|
|
|
|
Transmission...manual, automatic, DSG, CVT
|
It can be about the type of transmission used in the car: is it automatic or manual
transmission or perhaps even one of the new types of DSG gearboxes fitted into Volkswagen/Audi
.
|
|
Flywheel type.....solid or dual mass

|
It can be about the kind of flywheel that is fitted into the transmission
drivetrain.
Ten years back 99% of vehicles were fitted with solid, single mass flywheels.
Nowadays many vehicles, especially diesel are fitted with dual mass flywheels (DMF) DMF are
controversial because of the high cost of replacement and the damage they can do if they
disintegrate.

Diesel
Particulate Filters DPF
|
It can be about diesel particulate filters.
A diesel particulate filter is fitted on diesel cars.
It is a recent development in an attempt to trap the diesel soot before it goes into the
atmosphere.
DPF's are controversial because they can fail and are expensive to replace.
An alternative strategy is to remove the filter and reprogram the ECU; this also involves the owner
in a certain financial outlay.

|
Engine ECU
other Management control units
|
The ECU is the car's controlling on board computer which receives information from
the whole range of sensors.
It then regulates the way in which fuel is delivered to the engine, the gear to select and when to
stop the engine (applicable in cars with stop-start technology)
